Small Lake
This is a small "lake" on our property. We call this one a lake rather than a "pond" as it is about 4 acres in size and fed by a small seasonal stream. Fall is already here and moves through fast!

Beaver Damage
Well the beavers took down this birch tree. They can really get after it. Sometimes they start quite a few trees without taking them down which eventually kills them. Some teeth!

Ocean of Birch
Contemplating what I am going to do with all this birch.
Hmmm...
Lifetime supply of firewood...

Hard at Work
Time to get to work, firewood to cut and stack. Standing dead is cut to burn immediately, green wood to season.

Digging the Well
This is one of those projects that started off small and grew in size. Tons of work went into this and here we are about ready to put the casing in. Those piles of rocks came out of the hole. I like things pretty simple and a hand dug well is as simple as it gets. The idea here was to have a source of water with no moving parts that the wildlife can't get into and pollute. I think my arms are still sore...

Moose
Speaking of wildlife this moose just finished swimming across yet another one of our ponds. We had watched her for quite a while before we remembered to take her picture. It is amazing how long they can hold their heads below the surface of the water and eat growth off the bottom. This one could hold her head under for up to 30 seconds!

Getting Cold
OK, it is starting to get cold now but there is plenty of fun to be had. I have been colder in Texas when I wasn't dressed for it. Those are the famous US military "bunny boots" on my feet that all Alaskans know about. The wool liners are encapsulated in the boot so they can't get wet. Lots of survival stories about people keeping their feet with these boots when others lose theirs to frostbite.

Days getting Short
This picture was taken in late November and the days are getting quite short. The sun is up for only a few hours going from a long sunrise to a long sunset. This is quite an offset from the almost 24 hour days experienced in late June! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
